Temples of the new faith

Before Martin Luther, church services were held in the Latin language, excluding lay persons from participating in the ceremony. The priest stood at the altar with his back towards the church-goers who were often also separated from the clergy by root screens. Luther put the bible back into the focus by translating it into German. The new technology of printing allowed his writings to spread fast. So it does not come as a surprise that the Word is in the center of the church buildings designed after his ideals.

The first protestant church

The very first newly-built Protestant church in the world can be found in Hartenfels Castle in Torgau and was dedicated by Luther himself.
